Ceramic coating of exhaust systems in motor racing

The thermal load of exhaust systems on race cars is very high. Of the exhaust emitted heat radiation, therefore, charged in the immediate vicinity of the racing car parts, sometimes considerably.

We prepared for the racing team from the University of Graz, the exhaust system of a Formula Student race car with a ceramic insulating layer of about 200 microns thick.

In the Technical University of Graz, the following results determined:

1. Before coating
  • Gas temperature in the exhaust system 210°C
  • Temperature at Carbonmonococque 150 °C
2. After coating
  • Gas temperature in the exhaust system 250°C
  • Temperature at Carbonmonococque 90°C

It can be observed a significant reduction in heat dissipation. This leads to a lower thermal load of components that are located near the exhaust system and into something higher exhaust temperatures. These positive changes in the temperature management of the racing vehicle clearly enhance the efficiency of the entire system.
