Compounds of carbon with metals are called carbides. Carbides of hard metals, e.g. tungsten or chromium are extremely suitable for wear protection coatings due to their strength. Protected through a coat of other substances these carbides can be applied to several substances by HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) Powder Spraying. Only thin coating thicknesses are needed to protect the surfaces from corrosion, sliding wear, oxidation or erosion. The layers permanently resist high temperatures of about 900° C, have a max. strength of 1400Hv10, and achieve roughness depths of about Ra 3µm without any further treatment.

Pictured is a forming die on the left-hand side without, on the right-hand side with a chromium carbide coating. The fine structure of the stamping has not been changed, the stamp’s lifetime was tripled.

The spraying powders are mainly distinguished between tungsten carbide and chromium carbide. You can achieve different characteristics by adding different metals.
